Reflexology & How It Can Benefit You
Although reflexology may seem like some kind of New Age spiritual modality, its practice can be traced as far back as Egyptian pictographs dating from 2330 BCE. Artifacts clearly show that ancient Egypt foot-work was considered a medical practice, and hieroglyphs have been discovered that state “Do not let it be painful” and “I do as you say”, denoting a specific care and intention that should still be practiced today by Reflexologists.
The Chinese first began using the concept of reflexology roughly 5,000 years ago, with many physicians finding correlation between the foot and general health. Rural villagers have kept the tradition alive despite many ancient texts revering it as a solid method of treatment we destroyed during the Qin Dynasty.
Many other countries and cultures around the world practice some form of reflexology as a way to promote vitality and healthy energy flow throughout the body. In the US, the concept of reflexology as a medical therapy began to emerge in the 19th century, and was primarily based on research by Western scientist and medical practitioners into the nervous system.
